The Plantar Fascia is a long band of connective tissue that helps support and maintains the foot’s arch. When this tissue becomes overstretched, it results in sharp, shooting pain localized at the heel known as plantar fasciitis. This pain can often limit the amount of activity one can perform or distance one can walk.

This condition is typically caused by simple wear and tear over time. Most feet are not well balanced and given the 8,000-12,000 steps taken each day, it is not surprising that this ligament tissue becomes strained, tight, inured, inflamed and painful. Specific low arched or high arched feet are more prone to this ligament injury and certain occupations, which involve excessive hours of standing, and high impact sports (i.e. running) also increase the likelihood of this condition.

Plantar fasciitis can be treated conservatively with taping, specific footwear advise, podiatry compression taping, and specific prescription orthotic devices.

Other treatment options include MBS (Magnetic Bio-Stimulation) laser therapy, anti- inflammatory medication (topical and oral), and non-invasive Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy. On occasion steroidal injections are required.
